I woke up around 6:30 am in the morning and got ready by 8 after twittering, blogging etc for the camp. I took Kinshuk Sunil ,the most active member of the OSSCamp community, along with me and we drove towards towards the venue. We were already late , thanks to the heavy traffic of New Delhi which won’t let you do anything on time.

Anyways we had a slow start of the day but few of the participants were already there waiting for us to drop in and start the talks, and especially the Internet/WiFi.To tell you the fact, IIT Delhi, sucks in terms of network connection. No one is there to help you out, give out the details for the network even if they agree to provide you. Its more like a typical govt. institute (although i know its all govt. but still IIT is IIT). So whatever the organizer or volunteer reading this blog, please DO NOT CHOOSE IIT, Delhi as the camp’s venue, if your audience want to do live tweeting or live blogging.

After quite a mess we finally arranged the keys for the projector from some guy who was at Boy’s hostel and the camp started. It was already 11 past and were like OMG. So Rohit Srivastwa started with his first talk and i could see from his pace that he is not a normal human among us. Then upon having a chat with him i found that this guy is helping around government organizations for hacking related stuff etc etc. So in short this guy is the real GEM of India and is filled with immense knowledge about networks, hacking techniques and above all how to be safe on internet. Quick advices from him :

Never ignore https warnings

Do no use websites which send your password as cleartext when you hit forgot password

Keep your softwares, web applications, OS updated and fully patched

Always install a good firewall and a nice Antivirus on your system

Thinks windows can be a better server if used wisely, cause it would sit quiet , update itself and keep you calm

Other than this he explained about just everything like, public key, private key. His talk was mainly on “Backtrack” and he explained it quite well and everyone got the answers to their questions. He talked about all security issues and how can your system be exploited for around 2 hours. Yeah he really did and was quite interesting.

And yeah I forgot to mention, this generous fella, Rohit Srivastwa also gave away tshirts of Clubhack . He claims they were the left outs from the clubhack event 2008.

Next we had a talk on Maya Vi and this guy had done a lotsa stuff in Maya Vi software. But two things i dislike about it is that, it has lotsa dependencies and it requires a niche hardware (well probably every 3D modelling software does that ). Was not quite interested in this talk, wasn’t related to me anyhow. Yeah i know i am bad at times

After that we had a guy called Jignesh who explained about kerberos, yet another Network Authentication Security Protocol. Kerberos was designed in MIT university and it means 3-headed dog

Now I cannot explain the whole working cause you did not come to osscamp and you missed it. So if you do not want to miss more talks like this, then be there at OSSCamp Delhi tomorrow. Venue is the same IIT, Delhi and timings are 10am – 6 pm.

Cheers!!
Realin !

This is a cheerup call for everyone who have been waiting for the most talked about event “BarCamp”. Well we are all set to go good for this weekend. Thanks to Directi who is silver sponsor and helped us materialize the event. Thanks to all others sponsors as well.

As you know we have only 4 days to go for the main event to started. Lets get up and get our basics done.

1) Register yourself at www.barcampdelhi.com
2) Add your carpool (if you got any)
3) Post a BlogEntry about BarCamp Delhi 6. Use the keyword as BCD6 and for logo visit Here

If you need a reference post, then quickly i can point you to my blogpost Barcamp Delhi 6 – BCD6

But i am sure there are many others over the internet and you gonna add your blogpost to this pool. Guys this time BarCamp Delhi really needs your support. We have to show our sponsors that we have got the same enthusiasm and the spirit inside us and we are not gonna sit back, no matter how recession or downturn hits world

So we have another reason to put smile on your face

We are here at wordcamp india day 2 and a very interesting discussion by Pavan Duggal, Advocate, Supreme court of India.

Starts witht he very sensible topic saying Copyright and Copying are two different things. Copyright is a form of intellectual property which gives teh creator of an original work exclusive rights for a certain period of realtion to that work, including its publication, distribution and adaptation; after which time the work is said to enter the public domain. Copyright applied to any expressible form of an idea of information that is substantive and discrete.

Time period of copyright stays as long as the person who produced the content lives plus the 60 years after his death. The discussion as almost taken a shape of Q/A session. Further mentioned that Patent is something which comes into play when you invent something new. For Example, in india we cannot patent a software being developed but in US it is possible, same goes for the business. In India you can patent a software if you bundle it with a hardware.

Copyright only means the person cannot copy your content bit by bit, but can always make a replica by making some changes.

Is Domain name a Copyright ?

Domain name is nothing but jotting of some alphabets. Domains are available on first come first server basis. Just like www.maruti.com was registered by some guy from Andhra Pradesh. In 1998 ICANN came into existence and in Dec 1999 it passed a law that you can transfer domain. Under that maruti filed a case but the guy pleaded that “maruti” is the name of his nephew and the site is dedicated to him. To make his appeal more strong he added some birth certificate which later maruti found that it was a fake birth certificate. Then a panel of 3 judges sat and the domain was transfered to maruti, car manufacturer under the terms that maruti is the trademark and their business is legit.

So as long as you have a trademark of the domain then you can file an online appeal. But when i opened the domain www.maruti.com, it din actually opened and on checking the registration it alarms me .. have a look here

Is your blog post a copyright ?

Yeah it is , because it is your own ideas and personal creation.

Is a marriage ceremony Copyright ?

Anything done in public domain is not copyright, if a marriage ceremony is commenced on roadside and you dont have pandal then its not copyright. You cannot actually barge into pandal and shoot them.

We have an example here from the movie sholay. At that time in 1972 the music was sold to HMV but only for the music. In 2002 the author files a case against people reproducing the ringtones for sholay, so the concerned corporates had to buy new rights.

Exceptions to Copyright

Private use, research work

Criticism

Bloggers need to protect their copyright and intellectual property rights to the electronic environment , learn more here at www.cyberlawindia.com

Cheers!!
And i was there early morning, never wanted to miss even a bit of it. As i was already regsitered on the website so just got my welcome kit (sorry no tshirts ) and entered the venue i.e. Adobe India.

It was a really cool venue and the building was so well maintained, quite neat.. The experience of meeting new people and actually seeing people who only existed for you online i.e. on twitter or on facebook

Quite amazed to see many people and they look different compared to their pics online, certainly i was the one who looks pretty different as well. All day it was fun packed sessions and we had an awesome lunch in the giant cafeteria of adobe.

I covered the event on twitter and on this blog. Some of the topics are :

We gonna talk here about the direct advertising and alternates to google adsense or how can you increase revenue using google adsense. I would be writing directly which is coming outta Amit’s mind in his presentation.

Woopiee realized that this presentation was hanging around on slideshare for a while now. So putting this in here.

Stop Feeling Shy

No social service. You can only survive when you have advertisements on your blog.

Big is Better

300 x 250 px advertisements are good cause you can include, videos pictures and slideshow of images.

Where to put Ads

Users see the page as a “F“. Brighter colors are prefered.

Experiment with colors

You can do it with A-B testing like try different colors and all.Can match font color, style with your content.

Color Schemes

You can Blend, complement or contrast the Ad color. Dark color will go with contrast color scheme.

Improve Relevance

Section targetting in adsense.

<body>

<h1> Heading</h1>

<h2>Sub heading</h2>

<p>Content</p>

<h2> Reader Comments</h2>

<p>Comment 1</p>

<p>Comment 2</p>

</body>

Comments usually do not have stuff about the content, instead it has lots of adjectives. So we need to optimize in such a way so as to avoid the comments, ajectives. Now how to do it ?

Do not put ad tags near comments and the content which is repeating like subscrive to buttons etc.

Site Search

Do not assume that readers know how to search. Make the search button look prominent or easily viewable.

If you write long articles, try putting the search button at the end of the article.

Host search on a seperate domain like search.labnol.org

CPM, CPC or Link Units ?

The best performing ad units are Text Ads, after that are CPM based , multimedia ads, like videos , images etc. CPM ads pay you even when the user do not click. “CPM ads let you earn from the users who think you are a moron” Amit says so

Placement Examples

Search on the top. Link unit near the header or after the post. You can have a sky scrapper displayed in your bottom right corner of the sidebar.

You can use CrazyEgg

Your Images

Do not ignore image search by google. They really bring you lotsa revenue. You can get lotsa CPM from images sometimes even more than your content.

Flickr for traffic

Post images on the flickr, interesting once and you can actually convert those users to your blog readers.

Why Link ?

Help Search Engines

Authority

Good Anchor Text

The Dreaded Back Button

A good anchor tag helps a lot to search engines and link exchange. When the user comes to your site and hits back button to go back to the search engine results, then its a bad bad thing for you, because search engines register this action and that is bad for your page rank.

Learn Analytics

Use Google Site Analytics wisely.

Typical Mistakes

Diluted title/slug

Too many pages with similar titles/content – Make life easy for advertisers

Wasting Visit – NOINDEX, FOLLOW for tag pages

Allowing Stop Words in Comments

Smart Pricing

Feeling Complacent

Steal Ideas

Continue to experiment.Examples

Adsense Case studies

Media Sites – CNN, NYT, Network i8, etc.

Premium Publishers

Webmaster World – Seniors and Preferred Members

Official Google Guides jensense, problogger, barry schwartz ,chris pirillo

Adsense Alternatives

ADiFY

Blogads

amazon.com

technorati

Selling Direct Ads

It takes lotsa hard work and time. Spot the area where u want to display direct ads and experiement that area with google ads and then calculate what you are earning from there and then you can decide the price for direct ads.You can use Google Ad Manager to manage ads.

ok that was all from Amit Aggarwal.

Thanks to his wonderful session

Cheers!!
