Well its been long now since google rolled out its own browser from its secret lab. I could sense some strategy planning when google discontinued its referal ads. As basically the referal ads were more of “google toolbar powered firefox” with some other products like picasa etc.

Google is no doubt everyone’s first choice and users see google as a brand of trust and service. So here i jot up few points for chrome :

Download and Install

The very first thing is downloading the setup and there on installing the chrome. You could find download link on the google’s homepage, the most clickable position on the world wide web. Regarding installation,google has been very neat in doing this. It threw a very small 475 Kb setup file i clicked on the link on the homepage. Got downloaded in a whoosh and there you go ready to install the all new chrome. No Setup, no clicking next-next or any options, resulting in clean quick installation. Just a mere window which neatly imports bookmarks etc from the firefox.

Speed & Interface

“Speed is google and google is speed” that is quote they have been following. After a lightening fast installation, i opened few websites and they opened marginally faster as compared to firefox. The tabular interface was cool and very light, the tabular view looks user friendly. I could not find menu bar and could see the standard buttons nicely placed near the address bar, just like firefox. The rendering of a page was exceptionally faster as compared to FFX.

RSS support

Talking about Rss,its the foremost important thing in a website and so is for the visiting users. I cannot live without RSS feeds.. hehehe .. I discovered that, chrome has no intellisense to smell the RSS from websites. Don’t tell me i have to manually add stuff to my rss reader.

Memory & Stability

I must admit that google is planning something really big. They are planning to port all web applications into desktop like environment. Talking about the environment, it gives you an inbuilt task manager, where in you can manage different tabs as in a desktop application. So these tabs are no more dependent on each other, instead are self sustainable. If a tab crashes, it does not mean the whole browser is going to crash, unlike Firefox. So you have more control over your browsing experience. 

History Management

Allright, i closed the browser and reopened it. Vola !! instead of displaying its own advertisement or any sponsors adv. (like in mozilla) it displayed the history in an iconic manner. That was really cool, i must admit.

Extensions & Addons

I must confess that i am in love with the extensions/addons in Mozilla Firefox. Chrome no doubt, would develop the same at a rapid speed but it is really difficult to shift to chrome atm. And on top of all, why would one shift. Firefox is fast, and its more of a community where you get latest updates and stuff very easily. 

In the end, i would like to say chrome is good, fast, good interface but it needs little time to get into everyone’s OS.

Today my boss told me about , Blackle. It is a custom search engine for google and it claims to save energy in the world. It says save a little, but do save. It works on the principle that, a black screen would take less energy when displayed on the monitor in comparison to any other bright color. May be that is true, it also displays the watts of energy it has been saving since the site became active.

Let’s start saving energy from now on :p

I was going through my rss feeds and realized that nokia has launched its high end model Nokia N96, as a rival for Apple’s iPhone. The strategy is great to launch Nokia’s phone just 2 days before the official launch of iPhone i.e. August 22.

Nokia Comes with 16GB internal flash memory, and supports microSD memory card slot (hot swappable) for expandability and flexibility.

Let’s see if this strategy of nokia works over Apple’s candy looking iPhone.

While Bharti Airtel has announced that it will launch iPhone on August 22, Vodafone may steal its arch rival’s thunder by launching the eagerly-awaited phone a few days earlier on August 18. In fact, Indiatimes Infotech was the first to report that Vodafone will launch iPhone in India in August.

Both the companies remain tight lipped on pricing and other details.

In a statement, Bharti said that millions of Airtel subscribers will be able to purchase the iPhone at Airtel’s Relationship Centres from August 22.

“iPhone has been an iconic technological revelation of this year and Airtel has been at the forefront of innovation and customer delight in the Indian telecom sector,” Sanjay Kapoor, President, Bharti Airtel mobile services, said.

iPhone is embedded with all 3G features and is twice as fast as the existing mobile phones. The phone also has in-built GPS system, which facilitates as navigation and positioning tool.

“Introducing iPhone in India further underscores Bharti’s commitment to enrich the communication experience of Airtel users,” Kapoor said.

Leading cell phone makers like Nokia, Motorola and Samsung have stepped up their R&D efforts to bring feature-rich phones in India to compete iPhone.

well ADOBE the big giant for the much used software photoshop has opened an online portal which lets you retouch your pics on a fly and lets you store the images online. However, it comes with a storage limit of 2GB. It lets you crop,trim,rotate images and instantly share it with anyone.

Adobe, made a smart move after its much more desktop establish product. It opens a new source of web income for it can make money offering Web services directly to consumers. It is there to give competition to many online applications, like flickr, picasa etc.

Also, Adobe needed to build the back-end infrastructure needed to offer the service directly to consumers, rather than partner with another photo-sharing site, as it did with its online video editor, Premiere Express.

“We’ve seen a convergence of trends where the everyday consumer is becoming overwhelmed with the number of images and they have the desire to share images in new and interesting ways,” said Doug Mack, the vice president of consumer and hosted solutions at Adobe.

“We’re at the point now with bandwidth that most consumers can use really rich Internet applications and also have a relationship with a service where they store and upload images,” he said.

The service will go live in beta test mode on Thursday. Mack said that the company intends to use the test period as a way garner feedback from customers.

Adobe intends to offer more features to consumers who pay a yearly fee. Some planned features include a printing service, more storage, support for audio and other media, and the ability to read additional image file types (the service works with .JPGs now.)

Adobe also plans to build an offline client using AIR (the Adobe Integrated Runtime) so that people can edit photos offline, executives said.

Among the chips in AMD’s Phenom family of processors is one that has three cores, or electronics brains, compared with the two or four most generally available. AMD said that its Phenom X3 has as much as a 30 per cent performance improvement in some instances compared to a dual-core chip operating at the same frequency.

AMD first disclosed plans to make the Phenom X3 in 2007, saying then that it was able to build a three-core chip because the brains are on the same piece of silicon, rather than two or four cores on different pieces of silicon joined together.

The company had a difficult 2007 as its full-year loss swelled to $3.38 billion from a net loss of $166 million in 2006. Partly to blame was a design problem with its Barcelona server chip that AMD said was key to regaining its competitive edge against Intel.

The processors are aimed principally at the mainstream PC market, but also include a high-end Phenom Black Edition chip that video gamers can easily speed up themselves, a process known as overclocking, an analyst said.

“AMD is increasingly focused on the mainstream PC market and I think they will be quite competitive there,” said analyst Rob Enderle of the Enderle Group.

AMD has improved its execution so far in 2008, said Patrick Moorhead, a marketing vice president at AMD, pointing to new graphics chips from ATI, a chipmaker it bought, and a new chipset that he said was receiving strong reviews.

“I think we’re on a little bit of a roll here,” Moorhead said. “2008 is a much better year for us.”

He said the new processors from AMD are particularly well suited to applications like editing and watching high-definition video, multimedia and gaming.

PCs using the processors will be available later this week or next week, Moorhead said.

Today my boss promised me that next time when he goes for a web 2.0 workshop, he will take me along. But right after one hour i gave him a news that web 3.0 is already in the market. Literally,when i heard about web 3.0 i exclaimed and said “Isn’t technology changing at a rapid rate ?“

So what this web 3.0 really is ?

Lets go see the WEB from start.

Web 1.0 was the good old web of the 1990s. In those times, all client-side changes were the result of a server round-trip. The Internet was ramping up in popularity.

Web 2.0 has been a little more than just a technological evolution. The staple of Web 2.0 has been the emergence of social media (Internet users creating most of the content), powered by mature technologies (DHTML, Ajax) on somewhat stable web browsers.

Web 3.0 is the next buzz and i think it will change the way we think internet works. Web 3.0 is not a new world, but its another web technology which will eliminate the difference between a desktop and web application. It gives user an experience of both offline and online. It removes the browser and desktop difference giving a secure channel and integrating various devices & services which is retained by the Operating System.

It is at the start phase but is growing like a weed on the internet, though its quiet at the moment and is exposed to few. So the best company to deal with webservices is none other than almighty google. The web 3.0 can be experienced using Google gears which help us build application which can made to work offline. Thanks to Google Gears, applications such as Remember The Milk, an online to-do list and task management system, can now work offline. The Adobe Flash player already allows application developers limited access to the webcam and the microphone. Soon, we’ll also be able to drag and drop files from the desktop to a web browser (see this Java Upload Applet for an example using the Java technology)

We do find these examples in our daily browsing experience, but we unknowingly ignore it, a simple example is AUDIO and VIDEO comments to wordpress blogs, it uses the above mentioned adobe flash player i.e. WEB 3.0

To start with these technologies may come up with various plugins, but soon it will be embedded by various major browsers. It is the same way the JAVA was introduced in early 90s. Ofcourse there is a must improvement in the GUI, animation experience to the end users, which is much easier and will make the User interface more glittery …
