Copyright and copying for a blogger
We are here at wordcamp india day 2 and a very interesting discussion by Pavan Duggal, Advocate, Supreme court of India.
Starts witht he very sensible topic saying Copyright and Copying are two different things. Copyright is a form of intellectual property which gives teh creator of an original work exclusive rights for a certain period of realtion to that work, including its publication, distribution and adaptation; after which time the work is said to enter the public domain. Copyright applied to any expressible form of an idea of information that is substantive and discrete.
Time period of copyright stays as long as the person who produced the content lives plus the 60 years after his death. The discussion as almost taken a shape of Q/A session. Further mentioned that Patent is something which comes into play when you invent something new. For Example, in india we cannot patent a software being developed but in US it is possible, same goes for the business. In India you can patent a software if you bundle it with a hardware.
Copyright only means the person cannot copy your content bit by bit, but can always make a replica by making some changes.
Is Domain name a Copyright ?
Domain name is nothing but jotting of some alphabets. Domains are available on first come first server basis. Just like www.maruti.com was registered by some guy from Andhra Pradesh. In 1998 ICANN came into existence and in Dec 1999 it passed a law that you can transfer domain. Under that maruti filed a case but the guy pleaded that “maruti” is the name of his nephew and the site is dedicated to him. To make his appeal more strong he added some birth certificate which later maruti found that it was a fake birth certificate. Then a panel of 3 judges sat and the domain was transfered to maruti, car manufacturer under the terms that maruti is the trademark and their business is legit.
So as long as you have a trademark of the domain then you can file an online appeal.But when i opened the domain www.maruti.com, it din actually opened and on checking the registration it alarms me .. have a look here
Is your blog post a copyright ?
Yeah it is , because it is your own ideas and personal creation.
Is a marriage ceremony Copyright ?
Anything done in public domain is not copyright, if a marriage ceremony is commenced on roadside and you dont have pandal then its not copyright. You cannot actually barge into pandal and shoot them.
We have an example here from the movie sholay. At that time in 1972 the music was sold to HMV but only for the music. In 2002 the author files a case against people reproducing the ringtones for sholay, so the concerned corporates had to buy new rights.

Wordcamp India at Adobe Noida, First Day
Well O’ well finally the day was here when the India’s very first wordcamp is gonna happen. And i was there early morning, never wanted to miss even a bit of it. As i was already regsitered on the website so just got my welcome kit (sorry no tshirts 
) and entered the venue i.e. Adobe India.
It was a really cool venue and the building was so well maintained, quite neat.. The experience of meeting new people and actually seeing people who only existed for you online i.e. on twitter or on facebook
Quite amazed to see many people and they look different compared to their pics online, certainly i was the one who looks pretty different as well. All day it was fun packed sessions and we had an awesome lunch in the giant cafeteria of adobe.

We gonna talk here about the direct advertising and alternates to google adsense or how can you increase revenue using google adsense. I would be writing directly which is coming outta Amit’s mind in his presentation.

Stop Feeling Shy
No social service. You can only survive when you have advertisements on your blog.
Big is Better
300 x 250 px advertisements are good cause you can include, videos pictures and slideshow of images.
Where to put Ads
Users see the page as a “F“. Brighter colors are prefered.
Experiment with colors
You can do it with A-B testing like try different colors and all.Can match font color, style with your content.
Color Schemes
You can Blend,complement or contrast the Ad color. Dark color will go with contrast color scheme.
Improve Relevance
Section targetting in adsense.

Comments usually do not have stuff about the content, instead it has lots of adjectives. So we need to optimize in such a way so as to avoid the comments, ajectives. Now how to do it ?
Do not put ad tags near comments and the content which is repeating like subscrive to buttons etc.
Site Search
- Do not assume that readers know how to search. Make the search button look prominent or easily viewable.
- If you write long articles, try putting the search button at the end of the article.
- Host search on a seperate domain like search.labnol.org
CPM, CPC or Link Units ?
The best performing ad units are Text Ads, after that are CPM based , multimedia ads, like videos , images etc. CPM ads pay you even when the user do not click. “CPM ads let you earn from the users who think you are a moron” Amit says so

Matt, loved textpad to blog with. So matt met this guy called mike and they converted b2 to wordpress. Now there are about 23-24 wordcamps all over world now.
Matt thinks last year was really good for wordpress casue people around the world started to get involved more and more. Average user install around 4.96 plugin. couple of weeks ago wordpress crossed 4000+ plugins and 5000+ themes which are officially listed with wordpress. WordPress also added Built-in update and installers which was also a time saver for matt.
14 days back 2.7.1 v of wordpress released and 41,730 downloads per day which is actually 2.5 times than other versions update. Matt is kinda impressed with firefox update use case
alright we have “Hindi” in matt’s presentation, oh what some more bangla, telgu, marathi. So wordpress is healthy enough with regional languages of India. 11,651 blogs are in other regional languages up and working.
15-20 thousand people are testing wordpress 2.8 release. Testing, coding 24 hours, re-iterations, re-designs makes up a new release.

- Faster, minimize the http,caching trips.
- Moving widgets in the side bar, for the end user

Further matt says that one can copy wordpress and make a clonepress but cannot copy the community associated that is we all. When matt started wordpress he was a kid studying political science no computer science at all.
How can you help as a community ?
Write a tutorial, write some plugins if you know PHP. Make themes if you are a designer. Help people, help community.
